The model based supply chain; what is reality?

For quite some time, our focus has been on the production of interoperable data and the progress has been quite impressive.  Software that enables more sophisticated product design, manufacturing, and support has enriched the product lifecycle in ways previously not imagined just a decade ago.  As the industry moves to a model based paradigm at the value stream level, concepts like digital threads, digital twins, Internet of Things, collaborative integrated digital environments, and more build upon this foundation.

How is the supply chain reacting to this?  By some estimates, upwards of 70% of any manufactured product is purchased.  With such a high degree of design and manufacturing delegated to the supply chain, consuming the interoperable data and providing interoperable data back to the purchaser becomes a mandatory item.  As we enthusiastically expand upon the means of producing interoperable data, are the means of consumption keeping up?
