TSMC site plan blocked in north Taiwan

Seems like this 2nm plant was not for the immediate future but still interesting that they got blocked on land use issues. That they gave up may lend weight to them using capacity elsewhere.

I think that was a 1nm fab and TSMC has other places to build so this is a nothing burger. Here is another version of the story:

Chen Chi-mai, mayor of Kaohsiung in the south where TSMC is currently building a 2-nanometre chip factory, said his city has enough water, power, and land for more semiconductor factories. "Opportunities are reserved for those who are prepared," he told reporters.

2nm is going to be an interesting race. Today it looks like there are three horses which good for the ecosystem, absolutely. If so, we may have an overbuild situation here.

Longtan is never the candidate for 2nm fab site. It was considered for N1.4 or N1. 2nm HVM will start from Hsinchu. The question is where's the next 2nm HVM site? There were two options: Taichung (central of TW) or Kaohsiung (south of TW). Now tsmc has officially announced Kaohsiung will be the 2nd 2nm HVM site. From current information, Hsinchu's capacity along is enough for N2, it's likely Kaosiung will directly start from N2P.

For N1.4/1.0, as Daniel mentioned, there are still a lot of location options in Taiwan.

And don't forget that Japan, US, and Germany can also be welcomed to make an offer for the second TSMC N1.4/1.0 fab.
