Intel Rolls out 16nm Process Technology

Nice press release munging. I spent quite a bit of time with IFS at the Design Automation conference this week. We will be writing more about it later. Samsung was there as well. TSMC of course was missing as was Synopsys. It is a sad day when the #1 companies do not support the #1 ecosystem conference.

Do you know the reason why they are both missing from this conference?

Do you know the reason why they are both missing from this conference?

TSMC and Synopsys both have private events that are well attended, much more than DAC, and it is invitation only. Synopsys did have a 10x20 booth for academics which is a big part of the attendees. Covid really did decimate DAC and other live events but they are coming back. SEMICON West was very well attended.

The other problem is the location. DAC usually moves around but it has been stuck in SF for several years so it is a bit stale. When looking at badge scans in the exhibits big vendors see the same people every year which is not a good look for marketing budgets. DAC will again be in SF next year moving to San Diego the following year. SEMICON West is moving to AZ next year so 2024 will be even more challenging for DAC.

DAC traffic improved this year for sure but nowhere near pre pandemic levels. But again, SF is part of the problem. Another issue I see is acquisitions. EDA has been stripped the last couple of years with dozens of acquisitions and there are fewer EDA start ups in the pipeline.
