Intel new trick: Tick-Tock-Toe? Kaby Lake platform to replace Skylake

Intel's 10nm 'Cannonlake' delayed, replaced by 14nm 'Kaby Lake' - TechSpot

View attachment 14641

Kaby Lake represents an uncomfortable truth in the silicon processor world as of late: manufacturing is becoming more and more difficult. Cannonlake and the 10nm process has been delayed several times. Enthusiasts may note that progress is so slow, even venerable Sandybridge processors such as the 2500k and 2600k, launched in 2011, hold their own against and occasionally surpass modern chips in terms of raw performance.

Is this also the end of the Intel's Tick-Tock era?
I really do not understand what kind of game is Intel trying to play, Tic Tac Toe maybe :)
It is crazy if we think that the best competitor for Intel is now Intel. In an 18 months timeframe they are releasing a Tick (broadwell), a Tock (skylake) and a Tack (kaby lake).
Bad scheduling, manufacturing issues or maybe just Panic?

Not good news at all. Remember Intel 10nm is much different than Samsung and TSMC 10nm so do not expect 10nm delays en masse. I'm still told that both TSMC and Samsung will tape out 10nm in Q4 2015. Performance may be a little less than targeted but they will tape out, absolutely.

Another thing to note is that ARM is pushing very hard on the server side of late. If QCOM or someone else has a 10nm ARM based server chip out in 2016 it could lead to both a PR victory and a competitive advantage.

Interesting times for sure.
