TSMC is considering to build a fab in Singapore. I'm actually a bit surprised at the location. I would've thought TSMC's next fab location would be in Germany (for political/economic considerations).
1. TSMC can move or expand non leading edge production to Singapore. It allows them to use their precious Taiwan fabs, new or old, for high value manufacturing.
2. Southeast Asia countries are good at semiconductor testing and packaging already. This project can utilize that capability efficiently.
3. This is a cost effective way to diversify manufacturing locations and reduce TSMC international customers' concerns.
4. Singapore has a efficient and less corrupted government. The business environment is friendly and stable. Mandarin Chinese is one of the official language both in Taiwan and in Singapore.
Historically Taiwan and Singapore have a very friendly relationship. This is critical to the billions of long term investment.
Singapore has one of the world's best governments, if not the best. This has to be a major draw on top of their use of technologies, such as those used in Nuwater where Singapore has mastered the recycling of water which is key to everything. It looks like this could be but one major technology that Singapore will dominate.

Any FAB in Singapore which is the leading edge FAB for the company?
A large percentage of jobs in Semicon in Singapore go to Foreigner which is a bug bear when the Govt is putting in Billions, and also a new FAB these days doesnt create a lot of jobs ... not much bang for the buck!
The Govt expanding the checkpoint at the crossing to Malaysia , also will have Rapid Transit System from Johor Bahru to Woodlands coming soon , so there will be no shortage of "talent" available from Malaysia if another FAB go into Woodlands.
