    I would like to point out that TSMC for 40+ years has benefitted from huge government subsidy from Taiwan in addition to a Huge Defense (US Taxpayer) subsidy from the US. In this same time period, the US Government largely dropped funding of Semiconductor R&D (starting for sure in the 1990's)...
