Intel 14nm is NOT in Production Yet!
by Daniel Nenni on 08-18-2014 at 2:01 pm

Okay, maybe I’m the only one questioning Intel 14nm yield but I think it will be an interesting discussion in the comments section. Here are the questions I would have asked Intel during their recent 14nm PR tour: Has the P1272 process been rolled out to the production fabs in OR, AZ, and Ireland? Is the process officially in production… Read More

Who will Manufacture Apple’s Next SoC?

Who will Manufacture Apple’s Next SoC?
by Daniel Nenni on 08-07-2014 at 8:00 pm

Just to review: The brain inside the current Apple iPhone 5s is the A7 SoC manufactured by Samsung using a 28nm process. The A6 (iPhone 5) and A5 (iPhone 4s) are based on Samsung 32nm. The rest of the Apple SoCs also used Samsung processes. I think we can all now agree that the coming Apple A8 SoC (iPhone 6) will use the TSMC 20nm process.… Read More

Will Intel Have a Bigger FinFET Market Share Than TSMC in 2015?

Will Intel Have a Bigger FinFET Market Share Than TSMC in 2015?
by Daniel Nenni on 08-05-2014 at 10:00 pm

Speculation is running rampant after last month’s conference call where Dr. Morris Chang, who is often referred to as “The Chairman”, commented that at 16nm TSMC will have a smaller market share than a major competitor in 2015. TSMC will however regain the FinFET lead in 2016 and 2017. Of course the blogosphere went crazy on this … Read More

Altera vs Xilinx FinFET Update

Altera vs Xilinx FinFET Update
by Daniel Nenni on 07-27-2014 at 10:10 am

One of the things I do in my spare time is listen to quarterly conference calls and try to sort fact from fiction. I compare past calls to the current one and attempt to predict what’s coming next. Confucius said, “Study the past if you would define the future” and I’m a big believer in that.

Paul McLellan wrote about the Xilinx call earlier… Read More

Clever IoT Devices are Coming!

Clever IoT Devices are Coming!
by Daniel Nenni on 07-24-2014 at 4:00 pm

Paul McLellan and I spent the evening with Samsung at the Bentley Reserve in San Francisco last night. One thing I discussed with them in great detail was IoT devices. Samsung is investing heavily in IoT and the supporting infrastructure. In fact, there is a rumor that Samsung is acquiring home automation company SmartThings for… Read More

Google Glass Fail!

Google Glass Fail!
by Daniel Nenni on 07-23-2014 at 4:30 pm

Not a total fail but I would classify it as a Segway type fail meaning that while society on a whole will shun Google Glass there will be a number of teksters that will keep the technology in circulation. Teksters is a word I just made up and submitted to the Urban Dictionary. Kind of like hipsters, teksters is a subset of counter-culture… Read More

Intel vs AMD

Intel vs AMD
by Daniel Nenni on 07-21-2014 at 6:00 pm

While listening to the Intel and AMD conference calls last week I was reminded of the ATI acquisition by AMD and the painfully long cultural assimilation that ensued. The title of this blog could just as easily have been “Custom vs Synthesizable Design Cultures” or “The Real Reason Why AMD is Fabless” because that is closer to how … Read More

Samsung Foundry Explained!

Samsung Foundry Explained!
by Daniel Nenni on 07-19-2014 at 7:00 pm

Rather than watch the World Cup battle for third place, my beautiful wife and I spent last Saturday afternoon at the CASPA Wearables Symposium. The most interesting presentation was from Samsung because it included slides on their foundry offering. In regards to wearables, I still don’t see the ROI I need to buy one, yet. We are getting… Read More

SemiWiki Big Data Exposed!
by Daniel Nenni on 07-17-2014 at 7:00 pm

You will be hard pressed to attend a conference and NOT hear the term Big Data these days. What is Big Data? One example is the data SemiWiki has collected over the past 3.5 years while more than one million users have passed through our site. My summer project, with my daughter the math major, is to harness this massive pile of data and… Read More
