
SiFive is bringing RISC-V closer to mainstream datacenter deployment with the BigSky SF-2U870, an enterprise-grade development server designed for hyperscalers, semiconductor companies, software vendors, and ecosystem partners. Announced in Santa Clara on August 24, 2026, alongside Hot Chips, the rackable 2U platform gives customers a practical environment for porting software, tuning workloads, optimizing models, and validating complete systems on SiFive’s latest RISC-V CPU technology.
The introduction represents an important step for an architecture that has expanded rapidly from embedded applications into increasingly demanding computing environments. Instead of asking developers to bootstrap software on experimental or non-purpose-built hardware, BigSky provides a turnkey platform intended to support familiar enterprise workflows. Lead customers—including hyperscalers and major software and system-on-chip companies—are already running workloads on deployed systems.
“SiFive is closely collaborating with industry leaders to accelerate deployment of RISC-V in the datacenter,” said Patrick Little, chairman and CEO of SiFive. He described BigSky as a powerful server platform built to accelerate customer workload and software development on the open RISC-V standard. Little added that the broader objective is to help customers improve the total cost of ownership of custom SoCs incorporating SiFive IP. “RISC-V in the datacenter isn’t a distant aspiration anymore; it is happening right now, and SiFive is leading the way.”
BigSky is fully compliant with the RVA-23 profile, providing a standardized foundation for enterprise software and reducing the custom engineering normally required during system bring-up. Out-of-the-box operating-system support includes Canonical Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. The platform also supports native execution of NVIDIA CUDA and AMD ROCm codebases, enabling large language models to run on their respective accelerator cards. Together, these capabilities demonstrate both the expanding maturity of the RISC-V software ecosystem and the platform’s suitability for AI and cloud-native development.
Canonical views that software readiness as critical to wider adoption. Gordan Markuš, director of Silicon Alliances at Canonical, said native Ubuntu 26.04 LTS support gives BigSky the enterprise foundation needed to accelerate AI and cloud-native workloads. The collaboration, he noted, allows customers to port established workloads with confidence and begin their transition to RISC-V in today’s datacenter environments.
The hardware has been configured specifically for demanding development and validation work. Each SF-2U870 includes 32 SiFive P870-D cores operating at 2.2 GHz and 256 GB of DDR5-5600 memory. Expansion capabilities accommodate PCIe connectivity and a double-wide x16 GPU drawing less than 450 watts. Storage comprises a 3.84 TB U.2 NVMe data SSD and a separate 960 GB SATA SSD for the operating system, while a 10/25Gb OCP 3.0 network interface supports datacenter connectivity.
For engineering teams, this configuration creates room to test operating systems, compilers, libraries, databases, AI frameworks, and accelerated applications on a platform. It also lets hardware and software partners identify compatibility gaps earlier, refine performance, and validate solutions before committing to production silicon.
Industry observers see BigSky as evidence of a broader shift. Patrick Kennedy, president of Axautik Group and ServeTheHome, called SiFive’s development servers “a major turning point,” pointing to the breadth of datacenter software already running on the systems as proof of how quickly industry support for RISC-V has advanced.
That breadth matters because architecture adoption depends on more than CPU performance. Developers need reliable hardware, supported operating systems, accelerator compatibility, networking, storage, and tools that resemble the production environments they ultimately intend to deploy. By combining those elements in a standard rackable server, BigSky shortens the distance between early experimentation and production-grade RISC-V solutions.
