Podcast EP362: An atomic layer in compute. A discussion of what can be built as graphene photonics scales with Cedric Huyghebaert
Daniel is joined by Dr. Cedric Huyghebaert, CTO of Black Semiconductor. Cedric is one of the world’s leading experts in the development and integration of 2D materials, particularly graphene, into industrial semiconductor manufacturing. With a PhD in Physics from KU Leuven and over 25 years at imec, Cedric built and led the scientific programs that bridged graphene from lab to wafer-scale industrial process. He joined Black Semiconductor in April 2022, bringing with him a body of institutional knowledge that no other commercial organization possesses.
Dan explores the unique challenges and substantial benefits of integrating graphene into semiconductor manufacturing with Cedric, who explains in detail the complexity of bringing a 3 angstrom layer of graphene into mainstream manufacturing. Cedric describes Black Semiconductor’s substantial investment in building the required fab line to deliver the necessary cycles of learning. He also describes the broad industry collaboration across many tool vendors to bring this technology to the mainstream.
Dan also explores the significant impact graphene will have with Cedric. He describes how photonics can be interfaced directly onto any semiconductor chip using standard CMOS processes. By eliminating complex packaging and electrical interconnects, bandwidth bottlenecks are removed and the full potential of photonics for next-generation high performance compute and AI architectures is unlocked. He explains that new architectures will be enabled by these innovations.
