About the role

Arm’s in-house IP team is responsible for building and curating Arm’s patent portfolio, trade mark portfolio, as well as supporting the business with IP matters relating to open source software and standard setting organizations.

Your role as a patent portfolio manager will involve leading all aspects of portfolio development of one or more technology areas from invention disclosure, through prosecution, to patent expiration. Opportunities also abound to support a variety of other activities including litigation, patent landscaping, standards, and open source  across a range of technologies including microprocessor, multimedia, transistor and circuit technology, IoT and software. You will work with our inventor community to advise, identify and protect innovation across the business, our external patent counsel throughout the world and our commercial legal team to advise on patent matters in commercial agreements.

There is some flexibility in the role and whilst skills and technical knowledge are important, a fit with our culture is too, and we are able to tailor some aspects of the role dependent on whether you are recently qualified or have several years post qualification experience, looking for a step up, step down or lateral career move, or seeking a return to a patents role.

As a global business, occasional US and international travel may be required.

What will I be accountable for?
As a portfolio manager, you will handle the patent portfolio of one or more technology groups at Arm. Activities and responsibilities may include:

  • Building a portfolio of patents, supporting patent prosecution and advising external counsel;
  • Working with inventors to identify inventions, reviewing invention disclosures, and working with counsel to prepare new patent applications;
  • Providing general advice to the business and legal team on patent related matters; and
  • Supporting M&A and litigation activities.

What skills, experience, and qualifications do I need?

  • Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office. J.D. from an accredited law school preferred. Similar qualifications from other jurisdictions will also be considered.
  • A background in digital/analogue, software, microprocessors, telecommunications, radio or related technologies.
  • A university degree in Electronics, Computer Science or a related subject is preferred, although other qualifications will be considered if suitable technical knowledge can be shown.
