Intel Quits Mobile

Intel Quits Mobile
by Paul McLellan on 11-18-2014 at 5:00 pm

It happened today. As I have predicted for over a year, Intel would not be successful in mobile and would be forced to exit the market. Last quarter they lost $1B on revenues of $1M (as Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up, that M is not a typo). They ship “contra revenue” with their chips for the tablet market, meaning… Read More

Xiaomi Already #3 in Smartphones Behind Samsung and Apple

Xiaomi Already #3 in Smartphones Behind Samsung and Apple
by Paul McLellan on 11-08-2014 at 7:00 am

The Q3 results are mostly in now and there are two big stories. The iPhone 6 of course, which started shipping just before the end of the quarter. The other story is China, now the #1 mobile market in the world. These have led to very different stories for different companies.

Samsung is basically flat with Q2, but that was a big drop. … Read More

A Brief History of ASTC and VLAB Works

When I worked for VaST our engineering was in Sydney Australia. To my surprise there was another, entirely independent, group working on virtual platform modeling and tools in another place in Australia, in Adelaide. Is there something in the Fosters? They had originally been part of Motorola Corporate R&D and Software Group,… Read More

Semiconductor Startups on Kickstarter!

Semiconductor Startups on Kickstarter!
by Daniel Nenni on 10-19-2014 at 4:00 pm

One of the challenges for the fabless semiconductor ecosystem is raising funds for new ventures. Of the things I do as a consultant, working with entrepreneurs on business and funding plans is by far the most interesting. Raising money is a big challenge since venture capitalists have largely ignored our industry of late. Kickstarter… Read More

Demler: Quad Core is Just For Marketing; Intel Will Not Succeed in Mobile
by Paul McLellan on 10-15-2014 at 9:00 pm

At Memcon today Mike Demler of the Linley Group (and coincidentally someone who used to work for me back at Cadence and who now run Memcon, small world) gave an interesting presentation on Trends in Mobile Processors. A mobile application processor (AP) is a highly integrated SoC to run the applications in a mobile device. Mostly… Read More

Intel: Spectacular PC, Some Progress in Mobile
by Paul McLellan on 10-14-2014 at 8:30 pm

Intel announced their quarterly results today. They beat consensus by a cent. Not surprisingly their business is driven heavily by the microprocessor businesses, what Intel calls PC and Datacenter. Revenue and earnings both set new records in both groups.

As Brian Krzanich, the CEO, said:In the Data Center, we saw double-digitRead More

Samsung Profits Fall 60%
by Paul McLellan on 10-07-2014 at 11:32 am

Samsung’s profits fell to $3.8B which is 60% down on where they were a year ago. They said this is primarily due to a shortfall in smartphone sales. Samsung’s problem is not that it competes with Apple, their phones seem close enough that the Galaxy line has been doing very well in places like the US. It’s problem… Read More

A de-parallel universe for Windows 10

A de-parallel universe for Windows 10
by Don Dingee on 10-03-2014 at 7:00 am

It was CES 2011 when Steve Ballmer sweatered up and pitched the coming universe according to Microsoft, where the same Windows base would run on everything – PC, phone, tablet, and game console. Getting from that visionary statement to Windows 10 hasn’t been a smooth ride.… Read More

Really Apple? Tanazania Leads US in Mobile Payments

Really Apple? Tanazania Leads US in Mobile Payments
by Paul McLellan on 09-23-2014 at 1:00 am

I was in Tanzania a few weeks ago. One of the conceits that we have in the US is that we lead the world in technology. That is true in many areas but in mobile the US is a laggard. Just look at the fuss made about NFC payments in the new iPhone given that Japan had mobile payments over a decade ago.

Another area where the US is a laggard, or maybe… Read More

What is the Latest in Mobile?

What is the Latest in Mobile?
by Paul McLellan on 08-06-2014 at 8:01 am

Most of the results are in for mobile for last quarter, plus the earnings calls are all over. The picture is not pretty. The big picture is that low-cost Android-based suppliers, primarily in Asia, are starting to eat a lot of market share from Samsung (#1) and Apple (#2). There were about 295M smartphones shipped in Q2, a measly 2% … Read More
