Bijan Kiani Talks Synopsys Custom Layout and More

Bijan Kiani Talks Synopsys Custom Layout and More
by Paul McLellan on 06-24-2015 at 7:00 am

Last week I sat down and talked to Bijan Kiani of Synopsys. He has marketing responsibility for design implementation products at Synopsys spanning digital, custom and analog mixed signal (AMS).

He was born in Iran and after high school he moved to the UK. He got his PhD degree from University of Edinburgh. It turns out that I was doing… Read More

How Well is HSPICE Tracking Current Design Trends?

How Well is HSPICE Tracking Current Design Trends?
by Tom Simon on 02-11-2015 at 10:00 pm

For about 5 years now Synopsys has held an HSPICE SIG event in conjunction with DesignCon. It features a small vendor faire with companies that partner with Synopsys on HSPICE flows. They also have a dinner with industry/customer speakers and provide an update on HSPICE development. Lastly there is a Q&A where customers get… Read More

StarVision to Debug and Analyze Designs at All Levels

StarVision to Debug and Analyze Designs at All Levels
by Pawan Fangaria on 10-09-2014 at 4:00 pm

In today’s SoC world where multiple analog and digital blocks along with IPs at different levels of abstractions are placed together on a single chip, debugging at all levels becomes quite difficult and clumsy. While one is working at the top level and needs to investigate a particular connection at an intermediate hierarchical… Read More

Taiwan Trip Report: The Coming Simulation Crisis!

Taiwan Trip Report: The Coming Simulation Crisis!
by Daniel Nenni on 09-15-2014 at 7:00 am

Even though the flight to Taiwan is somewhat difficult, I really do enjoy my trips to Hsinchu. In addition to the top two pure-play foundries being there, one of the top SoC companies (MediaTek) and many of the leading semiconductor design companies are there as well. All are a quick taxi ride from my home away from home, the Hotel Royal.… Read More

Special Interest Group for HSPICE at DesignCon in Two Weeks

Special Interest Group for HSPICE at DesignCon in Two Weeks
by Daniel Payne on 01-13-2014 at 8:00 pm

DesignCon brings together engineers from around the world that are interested in IC design, package design and board design, plus the signal integrity issues of creating high-speed systems. In just two weeks there’s a Special Interest Group(SIG) just for users of HSPICE in their tool flow, and it meets for three hours during… Read More

TSMC ♥ Synopsys (HSPICE)

TSMC ♥ Synopsys (HSPICE)
by Daniel Nenni on 10-24-2013 at 5:05 am

In case you haven’t noticed, Synopsys has been in the press lately talking about their relationship with TSMC. Since I’m an internationally recognized industry expert they gave me a call for a briefing and I was happy to do it. Staying connected with the #1 EDA company is important and fun since I get to ask questions that most people… Read More

AMS IC Simulation Update from Synopsys at DAC

AMS IC Simulation Update from Synopsys at DAC
by Daniel Payne on 06-10-2013 at 6:19 pm

Last year at DAC we didn’t really know the circuit simulation roadmap for Synopsys because of all the EDA company acquisitions, however this year it’s clear to me that:

  • HSPICE continues on, although it’s a lower performance circuit simulator than FineSim
  • FineSim from Magma is well-loved, and faster than HSPICE

Hot Topic – CMOS Image Sensor Verification!

Hot Topic – CMOS Image Sensor Verification!
by Daniel Nenni on 04-29-2013 at 7:30 pm

Mobile applications require CMOS image sensor devices that have a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), low power, small area, high resolution, high dynamic range, and high frame rate. CMOS image sensor imaging performance is noise limited requiring accurate noise analysis on the pixel array electronics and column readout circuitry.… Read More

Modeling TSV, IBIS-AMI and SERDES with HSPICE

Modeling TSV, IBIS-AMI and SERDES with HSPICE
by Daniel Payne on 02-21-2013 at 8:10 pm

The HSPICE circuit simulator has been around for decades and is widely used by IC designers worldwide, so I watched the HSPICE SIG by video today and summarize what happened. Engineers from Micron, Altera and AMD presented on how they are using HSPICE to model TSVs, IBiS-AMI models and SERDES, respectively.… Read More

TSMC ♥ Cadence

TSMC ♥ Cadence
by Daniel Nenni on 02-19-2013 at 11:00 am

In a shocking move TSMC now favors Cadence over Synopsys! Okay, not so shocking, especially after the Synopsys acquisitions of Magma, Ciranova, SpringSoft, and the resulting product consolidations. Not shocking to me at all since my day job is Strategic Foundry Relationships for emerging EDA, IP, and fabless companies.

Rick… Read More
