Trump says he told TSMC it would pay 100% tax if it doesn't build in US

April 8 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he told the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which has pledged to build new factories in the United States, it would pay a tax of up to 100% if it did not build its plants in the country.

Speaking at a Republican National Congressional Committee event, Trump criticized former President Joe Biden's administration for providing a $6.6 billion grant to TSMC's U.S. unit for semiconductor production in Phoenix, Arizona, saying semiconductor companies do not need the money.

"TSMC, I gave them no money ... all I did was say, if you don't build your plant here, you're going to pay a big tax," Trump said.

TSMC declined to comment.

In March, TSMC, the world's biggest contract chipmaker, said at the White House that it plans to make a fresh $100 billion investment in the U.S. that includes building five additional chip facilities in coming years.

Earlier on Tuesday, Reuters reported the chipmaker could face a penalty of $1 billion or more to settle a U.S. export control investigation over a chip it made that ended up inside a Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL) AI processor.

If I was in my old job I would be working 16 hours a day to on a plan so that nothing is ever shipped to the US. We did this before when they had all the nonsense about repatriating money and taxes. I would also buy a large warehouse at the Singapore airport.

US Customs people must be going nuts at the ports. We need to implement the red envelope system at US Ports quickly

Simple question: If there is a laptop, Mobo made in China, Rest of BOM from China, enclosure and case assembled in singapore, with a Intel processor made at TSMC in taiwan and packaged in Vietnam, DRAM module from japan, and SSD from China, , It is shipped from Singapore to my house in US. COO is Singapore. Does anyone know how much the tariff is? Like within $200 LOL? Will it change by they time i finish ordering 10 minutes from now

It's currently $175, wait, sorry now it’s $195, OK hold on it’s $245, let me get back to you. :ROFLMAO:

they have a wheel of fortune at the SFO customs warehouse... Spin the wheel ........ wait for it.....Oh.... you landed on BANKRUPT .... So sorry! Thanks for playing, we have some nice parting gifts for you.

Trump can turn it into a Pay-Per-View event, just need replacements for Pat Sajak and Vanna White.

Intel's most advanced nodes, Intel 3 and Intel 4, are manufactured at Intel Ireland. Will Intel products imported from Ireland face significantly higher import taxes?

Many of the equipment, components, and materials—sourced both domestically and internationally—that Intel requires to build and operate the Intel Foundry are becoming increasingly costly.

Regardless of the circumstances, Intel appears to be in a very bad position, largely due to Trump's policies.

Even simpler: If a PC is shipped to the US. Is they tariff based on COO or % content by country.???? Is a Intel wafer made in US, tested and packaged in Vietnam pay a tariff. Surely someone knows????

Ireland in EU zone.

Semicon and Pharma very large part of Ireland economy and most are US Company sending back?

Potentially big trouble there if Donny whack Semicon and Pharma additionally!!!

But regardless and despite the difficulties in sorting out which is which, and perhaps tariff may not even be the best approach, in principle, something must be done to turn around the US trade deficit, it can't continue on and on forever. Many countries, especially China, have been abusing the trade rules left and right while also verbally accusing US being not playing fair. How ridiculous. They all have been charging a huge rate for US goods for so many years (some called it VAT but it's a tariff!). And now they all crying wolf when US trying to do the same?

Tarrifs those you have issue with you are not sparing anyone which is the issue aren't Australia/japan/UK allies of the US?

You have to admit, it is hard to ignore this show, kind of like a three ring circus. Semiconductors have hit the mainstream, we now have rock star status! CC Wei meeting with Trump in the White House was the best video ever! Is there ever a day when semiconductors are not front page news. Crazy, I'm loving this. My retirement will be pushed out a few years but I am really having a good time, absolutely! :ROFLMAO:

few US based packagers still standing (ceramics, high-temperature, RF, niche power electronics)

Which means that in a few years US will lose the few IC niches where it still has advantage, or vital needs (military electronics for radars, kiloampere level inverters, optronics, ultra-high-end ADCs, speciality FPGAs, integrated SMPS-on-package, Vicor bricks)

Also, the few with bright ideas of fuzing memory dies in USA after they arrive as uncut wafers in order to skirt tariff, and people who planned doing HBM co-packaging will lose big from that.

VAT/GST is a local based consumption tax on almost everything purchased in a country.

Not sure what you mean here.
