This is something I have been covering for a few years, the ability of the semi industry to radically improve medical and lower the cost. This is but one very dramatic example of many. This is just the very beginning, for the costs will only come down and the functionality improve, just like all semis. Semis are about bringing ultra mass production to anything by dramatically shrinking the scale. Labs of all types will shrink from room size to chip size while doing the same shrink to costs and time. Shrinking labs is all areas of endeavor will advance everything from research to education. The opportunities and benefits would take volumes to cover, but this will become a mega market for semis, many will be so cheap, they will be single use. This will have a profound affect on society as it speeds up and broadens the scope of research as well as its use. This is a coming game changer for the semi industry that despite what some think is still in its infancy. Only imagine where it will be five years from now and the whole new reality in just twenty.
I added the reference of enabling people with spinal cord injuries to walk, which not only GREATLY benefits the person, but the economy.
Combining MEMS, light and electronics in an SOC or single package will open up new frontiers as untold cost reductions and functionality are brought together with the literally the power to change the world and peoples lives.
