I had not heard the name Galaxy Semiconductor, had you? Mentor always had a very conservative acquisition strategy. They usually get outbid by Synopsys and Cadence. Maybe that will change with their new activist investor?
Galaxy Semiconductor Intelligence has been around for some 18 years now, and with ST and NXP as common customers it makes sense to me. Only the test engineers have probably heard of this company before Mentor bought it. Galaxy Semi hasn't blogged about anything for nearly one year, so perhaps they were financially motivated to sell the business.
Galaxy Semiconductor Intelligence is one of about 7 companies in this area. When I walked last year's ITC exhibit floor (after a 4 year hiatus) I was surprised to see numerous companies offering tools in this area. Galaxy had a much lower profile though they gave an excellent presentation at the Industrial sharing event run by Phil Nigh. Am not surprised by an acquisition in this area, PDF Solutions bought into this area the year before. I am doubtful that the industry can support multiple companies as I didn't see a lot of difference in the the product services being offered. Would expect more to be coming in the next few years.
