IC Insights has just released its 2015 edition of The McClean Report, now in its 18th year. Today, they announced an excerpt from the report on the microcontroller segment. Factoids from the release:

My observations: Least we think this is IoT hype, the report places 1.4 billion MCUs in IoT systems by 2019, compared to around 300 million in 2014. That computes to only 5% of the total forecasted units. One thing to bear in mind is the design-in cycle for automotive and industrial applications is still relatively long. If this turns out to be a conservative multiplier, sustained growth could be much larger - but still capped at a reasonable maximum, maybe 18%.
Press release:
Microcontroller Sales Regain Momentum After Slump
- MCU revenues fell 3% in 2012 and were flat in 2013, mostly due to pullback in smartcards and price erosion in 32-bit parts.
- 2014 MCU revenues grew 5% in 2014, while MCU unit shipments surged 16% to 18.6 billion units.
- Revenues are expected to grow 6% in 2015 to $16.8B, driven by automotive, IoT, portable electronics, and wearables.
- Unit shipments will rise by 12% in 2015, and grow at nearly 8% annually to reach 27.3 billion units by 2019.
- Price erosion is slowing, with ASPs moving from $0.85 in 2014 to $0.72 in 2019.
- 32-bit shipments will surpass 4/8-bit families for the first time in 2015.
