Is FDSOI the Path to 2D Technology

Does anyone have thoughts on FDSOI being the path to 2D technologies in the semi sector? I feel 2D is the next wave in technology in a great number of applications and fields which will make any IP very valuable for its widespread use and licensing across many industries. Hopefully the semi sector will lead in this allowing the companies that lead to spread their costs over a wide area giving the them a very wide economic moat. Any thoughts or comments appreciated.

Just a few areas where 2D will be key

structural
filtering light
filtering liquids
permeable membranes
3D printable materials, structures and electrical components
solar panels
coatings
bearing surfaces
 
Surely FD-SOI is in effect a simple 3D technology in that there are structures above and below the BOX ?
