Intersting trend - Apple moves significant cloud usage from AWS to Google

IBM was probably just too desperate and made an offer Apple "could not refuse". Whether IBM can actually deliver anything of value in this area is a different matter (and it appears they can't). IBM asking their employees to switch to Apple products was a weird move and this one was probably even weirder :D

However, after trying to score points at the expense of Google for their "poor" privacy practices, the optics of Apple choosing to work with Google on their cloud services definitely looks bad. There must be some serious reasons for taking this risk.

Agreed Dan - Amazon directly competes with iTunes and iBooks (is that still alive?). Hardware competition is negligible I would assume. But in the grand scheme of growth, Amazon is clearly swinging for the fences and Apple can't like that.

Yes, with billions in the bank I'd say that Apple should build out its own cloud.

In the EDA world even Mentor Graphics built its own data center in Wilsonville, OR to speed their own product development work.
