Intel and Saxony-Anhalt confirm close cooperation

In a press release, Intel and the state of Saxony-Anhalt confirmed close cooperation during the strategic pause of the Magdeburg project. Both sides want to reaffirm their continued interest in the project, even though doubts have recently arisen as to whether construction of the chip factory will resume.

According to the State Chancellery of Saxony-Anhalt, the decision to pause the project was "made in close coordination" and "reflects the strategic orientation of both partners to jointly evaluate the framework conditions and potential timelines and adapt them to market needs."

The fact that Intel has not yet given up on the project is confirmed by the following points:

• Intel remains the owner of the property acquired in Magdeburg and will re-evaluate the project in approximately two years to ensure optimal adaptation to market demand.

• All current participants in Intel’s apprenticeship program will continue to receive support and training to ensure the smooth continuation of their programs.

• In coordination with the state government, Intel continues the dialogue with local companies, associations and educational institutions.

Recently, Naga Chandrasekaran, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Intel Foundry Manufacturing and Supply Chain, and Christoph Schell, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Intel, are said to have visited the city of Magdeburg. There they met with representatives of the state government.

Intel paused the project in mid-September after an austerity plan was imposed due to the company's poor economic situation . The total of 10 billion euros in funding that was to be made available over several years from the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF) was to be returned to the federal budget .

The EU and German government were going to foot half the bill. But given Intel's US fab projects are further along it is more likely those will be finished first. I doubt there will be demand for this German plant in two years time but we will see.

There's a possibility German government will shift the money that was budgeted for Intel to other semiconductor companies to encourage them to build more fabs in Germany.
