Driverless Cars on British Roads!

Very soon we are going to see driverless cars on the roads of Britain.
U.K. government has given go ahead for driverless cars to be tested on public roads of Britain.
Initially, a car will have a person to monitor the car and take control when needed, much like when you get trained for driving. Now it's the turn to train the CAR itself to drive

Britain's Department for Transport sees no legal barriers to these cars being tested on British roads. The cars will be tested across the country from summer. Read full story here.

Is it reason enough for Google to smile? Earlier, Google was being accused of anti-trust violation by European Commission for its dominance in search engine. In the driverless car journey, search engine will definitely play a key role!

On another thread, Google has ambition to take a plunge in taxi service. It is pulling out of its stake in Uber taxi service. And it wants to start taxi service on its own, obviously with driverless cars. How successful it will be? Yet to be seen?

With some tragic and fatal car accidents happened in my neighborhood, I start questioning if a human driver is really safer than a combination of computers and sensors on a driverless car? Automakers can put redundant sensing and decision making systems in a car. But for a car you and I drive today, a mistake is a mistake and there is no other check and balance to correct or alert us.

I attended a conference several years ago. One speaker joked about the driverless car saying it will have a potential to add number to the population instead of decreasing the number of population due to fatal car accidents.

The whole audience were laughing. I didn't figure it out until much later.</SPAN></SPAN></SPAN>

It's a joke in bad taste, but it's true, driverless cars can eliminate road accidents. It's because they will be more disciplined, driven by technology rather than human with varying temperament.
