China's Cyber War Must be Recognized

The all out cyber war the Chinese government is promoting must be recognized for the threat it is and be dealt with accordingly by the western world. This is not some indiscriminate isolated threats, but a broad national policy that presents a serious threat to not only western economies, but our political and military security. China is already posing a threat to the semi/nanotech industry after years of widespread IP theft that has enabled them to compete head on with western countries by not having the legacy cost of developing or licensing the technology not only in a product, but the processes to make it. This theft has enabled many Chinese companies to be able to under bid western companies and has actually put some out of business. This has enabled them to sell equipment with back doors into the western world because of low cost. All this and much more has been actively promoted and supported by the Chinese government. It is past time they are either forced to obey the rules of international commerce or find their products banned in the western world. This is not discrimination for these rules should be followed by all to promote progress. If these rules are not followed and the situation gets even worse, the flow of capital that promotes research will slow down and also be restricted by additional security and legal expenses required to protect it and get a return on investment.

Being able to sell equipment with back doors is but one very dangerous side effect of the policy of active IP theft. It is past time for the Chinese to recognize this behavior is not even in their own best interest. In the long term, everyone will win if some basic rules are followed, including the Chinese. The semi/nanotech sector can no longer ignore this active cyber war if they hope to prosper. A very close associate of mine heading a large team had years of research stolen, but it was so blatant the company was able to prevent sales outside China. That doesn't mean though that pieces of it were not used in other products.

It is way past time for the rest of the world to deal with this war and that's what it is, for it presents far, far more dangers than just economic and technological issues. The Chinese must be judged by actions and not words. They will benefit far more if they join the world community to advance the world even faster than it already is. No power can do this alone, even a power as powerful as China. If the world does not deal with this, the damage could easily be as great or perhaps even greater than that of a conventional war. Both should be avoided if at all possible, like Winston Churchill said "It is better to jaw, jaw than war, war". If the Chinese walk away, they will have made their intentions crystal clear.

UPDATE

With the Chinese latest refusal to fair trade and recognizing and enforcing IP rights, it is clear the Chinese insist on a system that is not compatible with the western world. They have basically officially declared they will not stop engaging in an IP/Cyber/Trade war world wide with a take no prisoners attitude. It's sad that an agreement couldn't be reached that would benefit the Chinese government with most of the rest of the world. This is a major step backward for mankind and a very sad day. By their numerous initiatives and how they are carried out, they are determined to dominate at all cost to freedom and the right to prosper for themselves and the rest of the world. I hope some agreement can be reached, but I subscribe to the thought it is better to die on your feet than live on your knees.

Technology has truly changed warfare and this is the new type of a world war and we must learn to play the new game that technology on all levels has brought us. To bad we haven't been able to use the gifts of the technologies we have for prosperity instead of conflict.

Hopefully reason will prevail, but right now the situation could easily spiral out of control. Presenting win/win scenarios that both sides can accept is our only hope.
