This is but one of the early steps in the mega market of bionic medical devices. It isn't hard to envision a future in which these are not only to handle medical conditions, but improve our performance and life style significantly. In the not to distant future most very old people will be partially bionic and then it will just work its way down the age range in penetration. This will be a large market for not only semis, but MEMS and sensors made using semi technology. These devices will become smaller and smaller and eventually be powered by the blood of the patient.
