Atom in Surface3

Hope most of us have heard about Microsoft Surface3 tablet coming in May at as low as $499. It has 2GB RAM and 64GB storage and Windows 8 to be upgraded freely to Windows 10.

What makes it interesting is that it comes with 64bit Intel Atom x7 (Cherry Trail). The Atom x7 processor is a new SoC with quad-core. It has a unique performance management feature. It provides high performance when required and then scales back to power conservation mode whenever possible. The Atom manages power such that the tablet doesn’t need any fan, thereby making it lighter and thinner.

The tablet dimension is 0.34 x 10.51 x 7.36” and weight is 1.37 pounds. The Atom x7- Z8700 processor runs at 1.6 GHz with a burst speed of 2.4 GHz. The tablet comes with a standard micro USB port for charging, headphone jack, a mini DisplayPort, and a USB 3.0 port. The device will be enabled with Wi-Fi as well as 4G LTE.

Does that sound an interesting combination of Microsoft and Intel? I guess Intel will have good chances to come out of contra-revenue mode from mobile business, if this becomes a success.

I like it, but it is not much better than any older win 8.1 2to1 convertible. Microsoft is also charging too much for the accessories: $200 for the Docking Station, $130 for the Type Cover, $50 for the pen. Add these on top of the base model and you're already up to $880. Which is a lot.
