Apple vs Qualcomm, Law vs Technology

Arthur Hanson

Well-known member
Technology litigation is a major growing industry as tech becomes an ever larger integrated part of our lives. Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm, Uber and many others are spending ever increasing amounts on legal expenses. Autonomous everything from robots to cars offer another fertile area lawsuits. Increasingly any technological push will involve strategies that involve tax, legal, IP implementation regulations and government regulations as a primary consideration from the very start. These areas will grow as fast or faster than the money flow. Anyone who doesn't think legal, social and government involvement won't follow money flow has to take a serious look around. This will evolve to a whole new profession in and of itself of those who develop strategies for the intersection of new technologies and laws and regulations at the very beginning of any new project. To not do so will expose any new technologies to dangers that have nothing to do with the technology itself. Some of this is actually good, for unfettered technology can pose unforeseen stresses to the economic and social structure that could do far more damage than good if not properly implemented. This is especially true as new technologies are now part of the "Great Acceleration" with all its promise and dangers. New technologies can no longer be viewed in isolation, but as a critical part of the social and economic structure they have to fit or not fit into. We can no longer view technology in a vacuum and this must now be considered from the very beginning of any project for the maximum effective use of a companies, individuals or societies resources.
