File this one under Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt:

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's tech suppliers will get significantly fewer orders from Apple Inc. in the second half of this year compared with a year ago, no thanks to an ongoing slump in demand for premium smartphones and a lack of groundbreaking features for the upcoming iPhone 7, sources familiar with the matter told the Nikkei Asian Review...

China Heads for a Showdown with Taiwan - Bloomberg

I will be in Taiwan for the TSMC Symposium the week of May 23rd so I will write more after that.

I was looking for some drivers this afternoon and noticed Realtek's financials here: They sure aren't hurting. The Apple effect may be hogging the attention of some; meanwhile others diversified away from Apple and are thriving.

I am fascinated by the question of how Taiwan and China will resolve their troubles. Taiwan cannot remain independent much longer. There is too much disparity of military power and size between the "Two Chinas". So, the question becomes, how to obtain a good surrender deal. While the DDP didn't win on a "Good Surrender" platform--that would be absurd--they need to figure out a palatable way to sell surrender to the public. Waiting will worsen the deal they ultimately get from China. The first step to negotiating surrender is exactly what DDP is doing--credibly establish the threat of independence.
