AMAT has indicated in their latest conference calls that they intend to expand their use of semi technology in large format, 3 x 3 meters and possibly larger. They already have extensive experience in this area with solar panels and display. This will enable AMAT to create large scale active and passive large scale nanotech and semi tech panels that should open up whole new worlds and possibilities. Just a few could be managing temperature, pressure, energy and chemical/energy differentials as well as making materials with any number of properties. This will open whole new worlds in energy, filtration, and structural that are both active and passive. I feel this has the potential to make AMAT one of the world's larger companies if managed properly and they have the management team in place to do it. It's going to change everything and our concept of active and passive materials. It will also be interesting to see what they do with phase change materials on a nanotech and macro levels. By spreading research costs over a wider base, this should benefit all phases of AMAT's business and allow them to compete in many more areas than they are now. I feel semis and sophisticated materials science will form a more symbiotic relationship that will not only benefit AMAT, but technology in general. The large format materials sector is set for a major revolution in how base materials are processed and combined. All this could lead to a literal revolution in the structure and size of the materials sector and the tools to process them at all levels. 3D printing and semi fabrication will also start to merge at larger formats. All this will present major opportunities and challenges for all involved.
