3X capacity Li ion batteries would be a world game changer in many ways if this technology can be made practical. If we can ever master the production and use of graphene it could be the ultimate game changer in everything from semis to structural materials. One advantage is that carbon is everywhere.
Interesting, and progress with batteries is steady, 5% or more per year. That one looks many years from production. Is it inherently safe, self limiting? WHat sort of packaging required? Can it get to better than 90% after 1000 cycles?
Actually batteries went up about 18% in performance in the last year shocking everyone in the industry. Typically the rate of improvement has been about 6%. There are numerous promising battery technologies that I have posted on over the last four years and I hope one will give us a substantial surprise. I also see super capacitors adding significantly to auto performance by saving energy in a stop and go environment. I also see solar cells getting to 30% efficiency in the not to distant future.
Iam also looking forward to further graphene industry development and nano-materials in general. It has already crossed the line from being just a fancy experiment to being used in mass to enhance all kinds of products. Recently I even bumped into one company, that is tailoring nano-materials like graphene for many different industries. In general graphene is an amazing conductor so using it for batteries was one of the first ideas. So far the technology is really fresh and during testing, other top notch batteries are still on the par, but you can expect that in year or two will graphene dominate the whole industry.
