Summary / Role Purpose
The Senior R&D Engineer (m/f/d) is responsible for the development of software products and supporting systems, in particular for developing the LS-DYNA solver. The Senior R&D Engineer will use advanced technical and problem-solving skills to help the team tackle complex issues, satisfy customer requirements, and accomplish development objectives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Participates in planning, architecture, and research
- Performs complex development activities that may require extensive analysis in areas including user experience, software design and solver research
- Evaluate the performance of the latest software version against very complex finite element models in collaboration with the automotive OEMs and their supporting teams
- Supports with the diagnostic of numerical differences between versions, understands impact of formulation and numerical methods changes
- Develops and employs best practices for coding concerning computational efficiency and helps to maintain them through technical reviews and mentoring
- Performs complex bug verification, release testing and beta support for assigned products
- Researches problems discovered by QA or product support and develops solutions
- Plans, researches, and understands the marketing requirements for a product, including target environment, performance criteria and competitive issues. Works with strategic customers or proxies to assess needs and develop solutions
- Works independently with minimal supervision and may take on some planning and mentoring responsibilities
- Act as a technical subject matter expert in a specific area
- May be responsible for managing interns or co-ops but typically does not have direct reports
Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience
- BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with 5 years’ experience in LS-DYNA, MS with 3 years’ experience in LS-DYNA, or PhD with 1 year experience in LS-DYNA
- Commercial experience with software design and development methodologies
- Good knowledge of:
- General finite element theory and continuum mechanics
- Numerical analysis with emphasis on nonlinear algorithms
- Experience in software development in C/C++ or Fortran for computational mechanics or other physics simulation applications
- Passion for crafting robust and efficient code
- Ability to work collaboratively in a geographically distributed team combined with the necessary capability to overcome obstacles and to complete assignments independently
- Fluent in writing and speaking German and English
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Good knowledge of:
- Parallel algorithms for distributed memory computers
- Explicit and implicit time integration schemes
- Any of the following areas: element technology, material mechanics, or contact algorithms
- Experience in:
- Crafting robust and efficient code in a complex software environment.
- Delivering high-quality products in a large-scale commercial software development environment
- Ability to:
- Understand customer requirements and tools used in this domain
- Communicate and interact well with multiple stakeholders (e. g. colleagues, customers, etc.)
