Position at Ultra Communications Inc.

Ultra Communications Inc. – A Samtec Company is seeking an Engineering Co-op in our Vista, CA location. Please only apply if you are a student currently enrolled and pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field at a local University in San Diego County.

The schedule would be a minimum of twenty hours per week during school. Hours may vary but are flexible, ideally support is needed from M-F 8AM – 6PM. Pay is $24-27.00 per hour, depending on education and experience level.  Co-ops are eligible to participate in student program tuition assistance and may also opt to participate in Samtec’s 401k plan.

UCI Mechanical Engineers are responsible for creating 3D solid models of product designs, production drawings, building Bills of Materials (BOMs), and releasing prototype and production items in PLM. Co-ops have the opportunity to develop skills in statistical data analysis, imaging systems including scanning electron microscopy, microelectronics manufacturing processes, and failure root cause analysis.

Ideal candidates are self-starters who demonstrate exemplary written and verbal communication skills. They excel in a dynamic environment and can problem solve, efficiently, creatively, and with fine attention to detail. Below is a list of preferred qualifications and skills:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
  • Availability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during regular business hours while maintaining a full-time course load.
  • You must be available to commit to a minimum of 3 semesters.
  • Co-ops are required to maintain a C grade or above in all courses to maintain status in the program.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Objectives:

  • Use Solidworks to create mechanical models of assemblies and components
  • Understand how Product Data Management (PDM) is used to store 3D models
  • Learn what a PLM system is and how it enables the development and production of products
  • Learn how to create engineering documents and marketing literature documenting mechanical design and product performance
  • Understand how mechanical engineering works with electrical engineers, software engineers, and program management to achieve company objectives
  • Learn how to deliver products through a phase-gate design process
  • Understand how marketing approves and directs product strategy
  • Learn how to prepare product designs for prototype and volume manufacturing
  • Understand how mechanical and electrical engineers work together on PCB design

Work schedule:

  • Full time co-op: 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday – Friday
  • Part time co-op: Flexible but preferably in the 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday – Friday time frame

Equipment & Systems used:

  • Outlook / Excel / Word / Teams / Zoom
  • Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)
  • Salesforce / Propel
  • PTS
  • Solidworks
  • PDM
  • Ansys / Windchill (if needed for specific projects)

Skills learned:

  • Using above software
  • Communicating with project teams, electrical engineers, software engineers, marketing, and manufacturing
  • Mechanical Design of opto-electrical transceiver products
  • Mechanical Design of PCBs, optical lens, interconnects, and glass / sapphire / plastic components
  • Designing variants to meet schedule and ensure the final design passes environmental requirements
  • Support test engineering and operations in release of mechanical designs of peripherals, tooling, fixtures, and shipping packaging

Preferred skills:

  • Basic computer skills
  • Undergraduate course work
  • Experience with solidworks or other 3D modeling tool (ProEngineer)
  • Experience with thermal analysis and thermal analysis tools (Windchill, Flotherm, etc…)
