Already their are numerous electronic and semiconductor implants available for the human body with artificial retinas and colloquial implants for hearing. There has also been electronic pain control in various forms. With semis shrinking dramatically in size in the not to distant future we may see semis/mems/sensors/light sources replacing more than a few drugs. This will be a whole new frontier for the medical and semi companies. With more electronic implants every year, it's only a matter of time before this takes place on a broader scale. With our increasing knowledge of how the body is wired and communicates, it's not a matter of if, just when. The link below is from 2014 and everything has had large advances since then. It would be interesting to know how many projects are going on in secrecy. Thanks to the FDA and long approval time even for testing it will be a while before we find out. With our knowledge of the human body increasing dramatically we should be seeing new devices shortly. Any additional information welcome. I feel if the US keeps up with very slow approvals on development, testing and final marketing and a wall of legislative corruption, other countries will pass us in this area. Also severe patent abuse in the medical sector has been a barrier to a truly free market that in necessary to attract investment that makes progress happen.

Electronic devices would also be much more specific in their functions, unlike drugs that disperse through the whole body with numerous side effects(just read any prescription label). All this will propel the market for bio electronic devices into a market size that will compete with traditional pharmaceuticals. If these grab only twenty percent of the drug market, this will make them one of the largest market for the semi/electronic device sector.
