Speaking about Canon’s plans, Toshiaki Nomura, President and CEO of Canon India, highlighted the growing interest of global chip manufacturers in India as a destination for semiconductor manufacturing. “Many chip manufacturers are exploring India for their next manufacturing base. We are in active discussions to offer our technology and services to support their operations,” said Nomura.

Canon aims to play a key role in equipping these facilities with its state-of-the-art lithography machines. According to Nomura, Canon’s technology can help build robust manufacturing setups and contribute significantly to the growth of India’s semiconductor ecosystem. “Once manufacturers establish their facilities here, we will install our equipment and provide strong support to help them succeed,” he added.

While specific details about the negotiations remain undisclosed, Canon is optimistic about its role in India’s semiconductor journey. “We are in the negotiation stage and have ongoing ground discussions,” Nomura shared.

India is one of Canon’s fastest-growing markets globally. The company has been achieving double-digit growth in the region, driven by factors like a growing economy, rapid urbanization, and a young population. “In 2024, we are nearing double-digit growth, and I am confident this trend will continue in the years ahead across all our business segments,” said Nomura.

India will get there, absolutely.

Hopefully TSMC will build a partnership based fab there in the not too distant future.

Business in India is a very tricky business.

Many foreign Companies have gone in their without realising the complexities.

Joint ventures dont help when it comes to the Govt coming after you!

India is a great place for software/design. I bet they can have a really strong fabless design ecosystem with some investment.

It's a challenging place for hardware/manufacturing.

I believe they already have that.

However "bricks and mortar" I think very different animal!
