"Previously, Apple’s iPhones and iPads used PowerVR GPUs from Imagination Technologies for graphics. Based on our analysis, Apple has created a custom GPU that powers the A8, A9, and 10 processors, shipping in the iPhone 6 and later models, and some iPads. Using public documents, we demonstrate that the programmable shader cores inside Apple’s GPU are different from Imagination Technologies’ PowerVR and offer superior 16-bit floating-point performance and data conversion functions. We further believe that Apple has also developed a custom shader compiler and graphics driver. The proprietary design enables Apple to deliver best-in-class performance for graphics, and other tasks that use the GPU, such as image processing and machine learning."
Yes, over time the engineers at Apple have taken control over their own semiconductor IP for the sake of optimizing the entire system, and not just buying IP that any competitor can also buy making their IP non-differentiated.
We expect one day soon that Apple will use their own A-series processors in the Mac lineup of desktop and laptop computers, replacing the Intel CPU seat.
Not exactly news. We noted in "Mobile Unleashed" (p. 127) Apple moved to a customized GPU in the A8X, modified from Imagination IP. Further details are confirming that.

David is asserting a rather stronger claim.
All you claim in the book is "Next came an Apple-concocted GPU usingImagination IP – essentially bolting two PowerVR GXA6450s togetherfor eight graphics clusters. "
David is not asserting the use of a custom number of clusters --- that's been known for years --- but that the shaders inside each unit are Apple designed and not standard PowerVR.
Apple's GPUs are custom implementations of Imagination architecture. They would find it virtually impossible to move away from licensing Imagination Technology given their patent protection.
Let's see what the product announcements are today from Apple, we've been watching Apple have much success with their A-series processors in the iPhone, iPad, iPod, Apple Watch.
I would personally love to see Apple bring back the 17" MacBook Pro, in fact I started a Facebook Group devoted to that single topic. Come join our group if you really want to see the biggest display MacBook Pro come out of retirement.
OK, the product announcement from Apple is over and they have new 13" and 15" MacBook Pro models, still using Intel chips, thinner, lighter, brighter, new Touch Bar for hybrid touch screen, and new Touch ID for security during login and payments. No 17" model at all, so I'm quite saddened by its absence.
