My iPhone 16 Pro Max Dropped in the Water Miracle Story

As an avid sailor I'm shocked that this has not happened before, I dropped my iPhone into the water while at my dock. It was in my pocket and I was securing my boat after a sail like I do just about every week. I was fussing with the mainsail and it was knocked out of my pocket, it bounced off the boat deck then went bloop into 14-20ft of murky dock water (depending on the tide). I have Apple Care Insurance so I did not jump in after it. Also, the water is very cold with zero visibility so I probably would have died trying.

Since I did not have possession of a broken phone I had to file a lost phone claim with Apple Insurance. I bought a new iPhone and filed the insurance claim. AIG insurance denied my request for replacement since I did not have the find my phone feature enabled. It was a new phone that an Apple genius set up for me. Lesson learned.

The next week my boat bottom cleaner diver person was at my dock so I asked him if he could retrieve my phone and he did. He said he does phone retrieval quite often. It was slimy so I wiped it off and took it home and googled around as to what to do. I was told to put a fan to the bottom of the phone to dry it. Do not put it in rice, the rice dust is bad.

The next morning I powered it on and it worked! Nothing short of a miracle since it was in the water for a week. I do have an apple cover on it so only the camera and bottom plug is exposed so maybe that helped.

I took it back to Apple and had them run diagnostics and the phone was working fine. They were also quite surprised and I'm not sure if they believed me but the guy who helped me the first time was there so he confirmed my story.

It has been several weeks and the phone works perfectly. I returned the replacement phone I bought without problem at the two week return policy deadline.

As a semiconductor professional I am quite impressed but it was very unsettling not having a phone for a day. My wife did not know I docked safely, many texts went unanswered, etc... I am so technology dependent it is not even funny.

It should be very dark at the bottom of the harbor. How did he/she find it?

It was at my dock and I knew exactly where it went in. It took him one dive, he found it by feeling around. The guy cleans boat bottoms for a living and has retrieved dozens of phones but this is the first time he heard it worked afterwards.

That's great for you and for him.
