Yes. I agree with you. It’s logical to deduce it's important to have a second source. But it just didn’t happen for whatever reason. Perhaps is a bystander effect. Everyone waiting for everyone else to ‘ foot the bill’ and ends up with no action. In any case, lip bu Tan is saying they need to be financially disciplined and this optionality won’t last forever.

It should not be done in the first place. Do insurance companies underwrite risk policies without prepaid premiums? Optionality should have a price attached, just like financial options.

I guess it’s also the perspective you are adopting. If you see yourself as a mum and pop retailer, then you need to provide the supply first before customers come. Just like our neighborhood convenience store. However this probably work in a commoditized market. In any case , lip bu is letting the US ecosystem, including the government, decide if they need a second option. It’s dollar voting here. If they vote no, then we got to accept, however ridiculous or short sighted it may appears to be.

I don't agree taking that perspective especially in the US. In US, just apply game theory and market base logics. Personally, I think this is the underlying mistake made by PG.

Your take would work in places like China. They focus on long terms.

I guess right now it depends on what the ecosystem’s perspective is. But you did mention a very important point why almost all manufacturing is moving to Asia. They think long term but more importantly they acted the same way too.

😂I think semiconductor industry is already considered pretty good compared to some other industries. Anyway , there is a saying; money talks and bullshit walks. So after years of saying how important it is to have domestic leading edge manufacturing, especially by a US company, lip bu Tan is saying it’s time to show us the money.

Meanwhile, US is talking about building standard fossil fuel power stations to power AI. Imo, it is very backward, not to mention the environmental impacts.

You just do a simple thought experiment. If Intel is a Taiwanese company or a Japanese company or even a Chinese company. With a very decent shot at having the most leading process node , what will the ecosystem in those countries do? What will the governments of those countries do? Would they instead expect or encourage or even coerce a foreign company to bring their best technology to their country? So like I said it’s a dollar vote. Whatever the outcome, just got to accept.

Hence, I was thinking previously whether Intel could relocate to Singapore/Malaysia. I wonder whether the outcome would be better. There are talents from China, India, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Japan, and Australia.

It’s probably too late and not practical to consider those. If a break up happens , perhaps the design portion can relocate. But these aren’t the options now

Why should that help Intel ? Doesn't the same logic implies that all US semi companies should relocate to Asia (Apple, nVidia, Qualcomm, etc) ? And yet the US doesn't seem to have too much trouble pulling in top talent from all over the world to staff up these companies. The success of companies like these is far more about building high performing teams focused on the right challenges than location or raw labour cost.

Some of the US slagging off here is getting a little tiresome. Sure, you've got some problems over there and are doing a certain amount of crazy stuff right now. And I can't help feeling there's a massive AI bubble about to deflate. But the US retains all its proven business, technological and cultural advantages. And - crucially - the ability to react fast and decisively in emergencies (admittedly something we haven't seen for a long time).

I meant manufacturing. If to overcome TSM's monopoly, I think there should be additional helps needed. US cannot even follow through its CHIPS Acts.

we already know what they would do TSMC started from government funding, Rapidus in Japan(i am not hoepful about this cause IBM IP), SMIC China, US - yeah we don't care about this

Intel is not a startup. It's a 56-year-old company, old enough to qualify for a cheap "senior coffee" at McDonald's in the US.
