GM acquires yet more driving automation

GM just announced acquisition of private Cruise Automation. Terms not reported but estimated at >$1B. Cruise’s main product is Cruise RP-1, a sensor pod mounted on the roof of the car equipped with a combination of cameras, radar, and other measurement systems. These sensor pod readings are sent to the cruise computer, and make speed and steering decisions in real time.

Interesting.

Currently Google have a very strong advantage over everybody. But if car companies get better in the software front, and use their secret weapon - many cars on the road as testbeds/sensors - the fight may become more interesting.
