Economic Daily reporter Jiang Ruizhi/Taipei report

Trump will enter the White House for the second time, and the outside world expects that TSMC's advanced process may be required to invest in the United States early. Wu Chengwen, chairman of the National Science Council, said yesterday (27) that TSMC's 2nm advanced process in Taiwan is expected to be mass-produced in 2025, and whether the 2nm process will spread to other democracies can be discussed.

Wu Chengwen also stressed that the National Science Council and the Ministry of Economic Affairs have the same position, and the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing process and R&D center should remain in Taiwan.

Trump said during the U.S. election that "Taiwan has stolen the U.S. semiconductor business", and as the "Trump 2.0" era is approaching, the outside world is concerned that TSMC's advanced manufacturing process may be forced to set up factories in the United States early. Minister of Economic Affairs Guo Zhihui recently said in the Legislative Yuan that TSMC 2nm will be produced in the United States sooner or later, but the most advanced and key technologies will remain in Taiwan.

The National Science Council held a press conference for the committee meeting yesterday afternoon. The media is concerned about Taiwan's view on TSMC's advanced process to set up a factory in the United States, Wu Chengwen said that the most advanced process that TSMC has mass-produced is 3nm, and according to TSMC's release schedule, 2nm is expected to be mass-produced by the end of 2025.

The media asked, are you worried about the hollowing out of Taiwan's semiconductor technology and industry? Wu Chengwen said that it will not, because TSMC's next stage of process research and development has been launched, and it will only consider moving the 2nm process out after the mass production of the 2nm process is determined. According to the outside world, this practice still maintains the current Taiwan control principle of N-1 overseas investment in semiconductors.

Regarding Trump's accusation that "Taiwan has stolen the US semiconductor business", Wu Chengwen said that in fact, semiconductors cover design, materials, equipment, components, manufacturing, etc., and are complex systems.

He said that TSMC is only focusing on semiconductor manufacturing, and its manufacturing technology is now unique, so countries are looking for TSMC to cooperate.
