When will AI/ML hit critical mass?

With AI/ML advancing at an ever-accelerating rate, when will they hit critical mass and expand on their own without human intervention? I feel this day is coming and not many years away. It is already happening to some extent, but when it hits critical mass, it will do it on its own. Any thoughts on how far away from this the technology is now would be appreciated. I feel it's in five years or less at the outside.
