Trump administration orders federal funding freeze on all public loans, grants and more aid

A federal judge on Tuesday issued a stay against a White House directive that ordered a spending freeze on federal assistance, which sent Washington and organizations around the country into chaos on Tuesday as they scrambled to figure out how their programs would be affected. News of the freeze came as a surprise when the late-night memo was published by news outlets.

Judge Loren L. AliKhan for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said she would put the matter on a temporary pause as she considers arguments from the U.S. government and the plaintiffs in the case, who had asked for the court to issue a restraining order against the government to stop the funding freeze.

The memo from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget called for a spending freeze on federal assistance by 5 p.m. Tuesday, which could affect everything from aid to nonprofits, universities, small business loans and state and local government grants. AliKhan paused the enforcement of the directive until at least Monday at 5 p.m. to allow for further litigation.

Maybe JD Vance can help. Intel might need to add some Trump family members to the board as well.

That's why I believe Trump's high tariff proposal against semiconductor import or cutting the Chips Act grants and loans will not go too far. In JD Vance case, he will try hard to find a glorified way to allow Trump retreat. Unless JD Vance decided Ohio (his home state) is not worthy for him to visit again.

Do you think Trump and staff are playing us here? Knowing that all of his actions will be legally challenged so he can do whatever he wants without actually doing anything? At the end of his term he can say: Well at least I tried to help the middle class but the Democrats would not let me?

Does anybody remember when the US had a balanced budget?

This is just red meat being thrown to the hungry conservative crowd. After all, so many of us are effected on a daily basis by those darned transgender people, equity, diversity initiates, etc. [/sarcasm]

22 states have filed to stop this shortly after the DC judge did.

I actually think the entire blitz of executive orders is aimed at the court system. Trump will say that he needs the power to over-ride the court because they are standing in the way of the American people's wishes (watch for it).

This is how many democracies fail based on what I have read. Crazy that the country I served in the military for in the 80's has gotten to this. It's hard to imagine how the world (rather on the US) is going to weather the next 4 years of this continuous attack on the norms of the world stage and the US constitution.

LOL. Vance wont say "boo" without say so by Trump. Don't give the guy too much credit. After all, this is the same man who once compared Trump to Hitler. I'm thinkin the guy doesn't have much of a back bone.

Yes, Trump is making the Whitehouse and Federal government to be like a reality show.

More chaos, more confrontations, more contradictions, and more uncertainties will bring more attention and viewers to him.

It doesn't cost him a penny personally to produce it, a big reality show.

What about ukraine? Are they still receiving aid from the US?
For now. The aid was allocated by congress through legislation, so technically, the President can't stop the dispersion of what has already been allocated .... but he may be able to slow it down quite a bit.... and he can certainly make sure no more is approved.

He states in his book "The Art of Negotiation" something along the lines of .. ask for the solar system and be happy with more than the Earth.

(But yes - I think any President since World War 2 can correctly blame the other party for at least some actions not getting done :) ).

Not sure how we are going to weather 4 YEARS OF THIS!

I have a son working on a PhD who is wearing holes in his stomach at the ripe old age of 26 over this insanity.

I have a daughter in her sophomore year in Engineering that met immediately with her financial aid advisor because she is uncertain what all this may mean for her loans and grants next year.

It isn't fair that our kids need to be worried about this kind of crap. I know I had my hands full at their age just getting my degree and figuring out how to grow up.

It's sad about the extensive damage to campuses the violent student protests in support of Hamas and other terrorist groups did. Also, the harassing Jewish students is totally unacceptable.

Violence should never be advocated. Seems like the definition of "good people" isn't dependent on what they do, but rather WHO they support.

As a non political example, how many of us mourned the death of the UnitedHealth CEO? It is wrong by any definition our parents taught us, but I didn't see any protests?

Imagine if it would have been a politician?

It's crazy how most of us carry our sense of right and wrong these days. I am hoping for some positive changes in the future. Perhaps our kids will turn out better than we did.

My son is in his last semester of an aviation degree to become a commercial pilot, so I know how much the federal grant money has helped him. That said we need to find some way to kill of these federal grant and loan programs. The obscene rise in the cost of higher education correlates very well with the introduction of these federal program.

I do agree that this process should not impact those, like your children, who already started the educational process and based their ability to pay on the availability of these programs. I would be far more supportive of cutting them off for students will start in the next school year.

I don't know if we can put this genie back in the bottle, but we at least need to try and eliminating these programs seems like one way to do it.

While I sympathize with what they are going through, change is part of life. They'll be OK. If theyre in a position to even get a PhD at a young age ... They'll find a way.

Keep their glass half full.

I think it is easy to suggest radical moves like this; however, I also believe that before we up-end the lives of millions of Americans with a knee jerk solution, it would be advisable to actually have experts study the problem and provide a solution..... and for then for the elected congress to vote on the solution.

While all of these "executive actions" are mostly being stopped by courts (since they violate law in many different ways), they aren't actually causing any real problems YET. I spoke to my son recently, and his take is that while his current funding is good, the types of programs he is working on (AI analysis of MRI scans) is approved annually. With the bag of tricks the US government and administrations have, they can certainly cause havoc, if not completely sideline funding for research next year.

My son's personal issues aside, the attack on higher education can have decades long effects on the country. Scare students away from research? Great idea. Scare students away from becoming professors? Advocate conspiracy theories vs relying on scientific data? None of this bodes well for a country IMO.
