‘Zero Interest in Doing Business’: TSMC Snubs Phoenix Construction Workers

In IBEW training politics sometimes rules and has held back progress. In the jurisdiction I worked in a second rate person was chosen by politics over much, much more qualified people. Unions do good things, but they also have a severe downside and in many cases actually hold back progress. This is especially true in data distribution. They also use politics to take control of public works projects, driving prices higher for the tax payer. There are many great people in the IBEW, but many have been stymied by politics.
None of this surprises me.
 
The Asian model of employer-employee relations seems particularly advantageous in this regard.
Where loyal employees are reasonably confident they'll be taken care for life by the firm, as long they uphold their end of the bargain, so there is very little motivation for unionization. Hence the overhead cost of another politicisable hierarchy is entirely removed.

If TSMC has always been internally structured along that model, and now that it's grown to be so large, it would be extremely costly to change because of inertia. So it makes sense for leadership to reject the imposition of a different structure.

I chose the word 'Asian' not because this style of relation originated there or that every large company in Asia practices it but because it's the last place where the large majority still do. Or at least claim to do.

It seems likely that TSMC was founded and grew with those assumptions given the public messaging, founder's messaging, etc., though insiders obviously will know the true story. Whether or not they can maintain it under pressure is another question.
