I don't think Intel lacks engineering talent. I think where they come up short is experience in how to work with foundry customers. Time will fix that if Intel's finances don't sink them first.
I wonder if that is the unique niche that Intel should shoot for. When you absolutely, positively must have the most performant chip.... HPC isn't a particularly large volume market, but it does have very high margins.
The comment about the manual with the redacted information reminds me of the ridiculous levels that "protecting" IP were said to have reached at Intel. I was once told by an Intel employee that the height of the D1X fab building was considered IP. This despite the fact that anyone with a pair...
It is a bit long, but it is an interesting take on Intel's first attempt to enter the foundry business. I'd be interested in hearing a bit more about Daniel Nenni's experience at TSMC when they lost the Altera business. I did find it interesting that TSMC viewed the experience as a lesson to...
Given that the announcement already tells us where she is going I'm inclined to believe this was already in the works and she has been planning this for a while. At the very least this was plan B that she has been keeping in her back pocket.
Regarding Panther Lake performance, I think we are overlooking the fact that 18A has another process enhancement planned, 18A-P. That P stands for performance, so while the 18A performance may seem a bit underwhelming now, there are plans to ratchet it up. Given Panther Lake is a laptop...
Because the U.S. wants leading edge manufacturing in their own country?
Why people keep wanting to pretend the TSMC is bringing the leading edge to the U.S. is beyond me. Assuming Intel is successful, and looking at TSMC's timeline it is apparent that, at best, TSMC will be on N-1 at any...
I just about spit my drink on the screen when I read this bit. "The combined company would later invest in research and development in the U.S. and could eventually become an alternative to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's top chipmaker, according to the assessment." If only...
I really believe that is due to the economics more than the plan. Gelsinger seemed to be unwilling to adapt the plan to match the economic realities that Intel is facing. Hence, he is gone. And yet the general vision he laid out still seems to be largely intact from what I can see.
So you object to the marketing. Fine.
Remind me how far behind in PPA Intel was 4 years ago and where they are now? I don't care what you call it from a marketing perspective, Intel has gone from dead in the water at 10nm to at least having something worth looking at in 4 years. That is the...
This isn't a complete surprise as Ann Kelleher announced her pending retirement in October of last year. The big change here is that Navid Shahriari, who was supposed to take over the TD org for Kelleher, has been put in charge of the post fab operations rather than taking over the TD org...
This one has me scratching my head. You don't get to just eliminate Litho layers. If you don't use EUV you have to use DUV and you will need more DUV steps to achieve the same resolution. How this leads to improved yield is beyond me.
If I'm not mistaken much of Intel's fall from grace was...
Intel really needs the customer feedback from these engagements to get up to speed as a foundry even if they don't land many early contracts. From everything I've read Lip-Bu Tan will be actively seeking that feedback and acting on it to improve IFS's ability to offer competitive services.
That is a complete misrepresentation of the purpose of copy exactly. As it was explained to me, when Craig Barrett was CEO they had huge issues with variation from fab to fab. It was supposedly so bad that customers were asking to only be given chips with certain stamps on the packaging (which...
