Has anyone heard of Poet Technologies? I have been hearing about this little company. From their web page - "The POET (Planar Opto Electronic Technology) platform is a patented semiconductor fabrication process that uses gallium arsenide technology to combine electronic and optical elements on a single integrated circuit." In their press releases, they note that Ajit Manocha, former CEO of GF, is their new co-chair. They have formed a collaboration with Synopsys (deployment of Sentaurus for their TDK project), and are working with a "third party" fab. Poet is making some fairly amazing claims. It seems they are projecting to complete an electrical 100nm ring ocsillator to compete with silicon in the next month or so, and are also working on a 50GHz VCSEL milestone to be completed this quarter. I would love to hear any thoughts on this company and the technology. From their web site:
[h=2]Key benefits of the POET platform include:[/h]
Application Performance up to 10x faster than existing technologies
Up to 90% solution power savings improvement over existing technologies (depending on application)
Flexible and integrated application solutions that can be applied to virtually any technical application, including processors, SoC, memory, digital/mobile, sensor/laser and electro-optical, among many others
POET process can be deployed into existing silicon fabs – Since POET is a CMOS friendly technology fabricated using standard lithography techniques; it could be easily integrated into current semiconductor production facilities extending the profitable utilization of fabrication equipment and production lines.
Thanks posting the link to the Poet web page, Fred. I had sent a note to Nenni concerning Poet after I looked at his book. His reply was simply that he did not have the interest or the time to look into Poet. Surprising from someone who seems so involved in keeping in tune with developments in the semi industry. Regardless, I realize from the Poet web page that they filed a 20-F with the SEC last year, so they are planning to uplist at some point. I see they are attending Confab in Las Vegas in May and also sponsoring the event. I also see they are running a 15 ad on Business TV. So whats up with this company that no one seems to know much about?
Well we know Intel is working on the same or very similar approach but with less aggressive goals for the light valves. Amazing stuff going on in lasers so these guys might be on to something especially given that many aspects of silicon tech is in the flat portion of the curve.
Interesing you mention Intel working on something similar. Poet web site has the following article on Intel, which states Intel is "The most likely replacement for silicon is a III-V semiconductor such as indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs), though Intel hasn't provided any specific details yet." Intel forges ahead to 10nm, will move away from silicon at 7nm | Ars Technica
Why on earth would Poet put up an Intel article on their own web site?
With Ajit Manocha, Synopsys, "third party fab", and 20 years of research behind them, you may be right in saying Poet may be on to something. I am not that much of a tech guy, so would like to hear some comments from those in the industry that can talk to Poet's tech claims. Their chief scientist, Dr. Geoff Taylor, has plenty of credentials but he talks way over my head.
Now it seems Poet Technologies is sponsoring Confab. The ConFab
Does this little company have a tech worth looking at? Would love comments from some semi experts.
OK. Now a connection to Apple. This is getting a little much. No comments from industry experts on this forum. What's up with that? Today, Poet Technologies announced the signing of a collaboration agreement with BAE. BAE is among the world's largest defence contractors. Poet also announced the formation of a "Technical Roadmap Advisory Board", which includes Dr Geoff Taylor, their chief scientist; Ajit Manocha Poet's Co-Chairman (formerly CEO of GF); and Tony Blevins, VP at Apple! So it seems little Poet now has ties with GF, BAE, and Apple! Is this tech getting anyone's attention yet? JustDave, I am trying to get some "expert" opinion on the technology to try to understand if an investment is warranted. Are you in the semi industry? Can you advise on the soundness of the claims?
I am a Poet shareholder, it's a great story that if they have what they have, the company will be worth a lot of money.
Daniel has given the website and a great DD page/website. Rengaw, expert opinion will be difficult as this technology is like no other, and everyone has their own agenda, like you and JustDave
