Any information on what foundries will win Qualcomm server chip business and what technologies used? If split, who will win the most? Any thoughts or comments on the Google/Qualcomm relationship?
Samsung...... Samsung did a 10nm paper last week at ISSCC. According to the paper Samsung 10nm is ahead of TSMC 10nm on PPA (power-performance-area). Hopefully QCOM 10nm server chips will be ahead of Intel 10nm so they will have a fighting chance!
Samsung has publicly stated they are seeking foundry server chip business. Given their frenemy relationship around the S820 on 14 nm, it would be a natural extension.
I do not think splitting is in the picture for now. Google is just evaluating the new chips. Nobody buys them in volume so using two foundries would not make sense. And until there is a meaningful demand for these chips this business is not much of a "win" for any foundry.
Samsung may be ahead in 10nm, like in 14nm earlier, but we will have to see the yield and ramp-up. As this will be a debut in server business for Qualcomm, they have to be extra careful in choosing the foundry with well proven results, to establish their credibility in the business.
