Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. will hire nearly 4,500 people to work at its new facility in north Phoenix, with about half of those jobs already filled.
The chip manufacturing giant has been lauded by business advocates and government officials, from City Council to President Joe Biden, for creating high-wage jobs for people across all levels of education.
While the company declined to disclose salary ranges for jobs offered at the plant, a company spokesperson said the average salary at the plant will be higher than Arizona’s average annual wage for the manufacturing sector, which is $88,868 per year, according to data from the Arizona Commerce Authority.
“While many roles require undergraduate or graduate level degrees and relevant work experience, some positions require high school or associate degrees or technical certifications,” a TSMC spokesperson said in an email.
Job postings and data reported by TSMC employees give a look at what salaries will look like at the plant for employees at various levels.
How much will technicians be paid at TSMC?According to a TSMC job posting, an entry-level equipment maintenance technician can earn between $24 and $35 per hour. The job requires a high school diploma or GED with machine maintenance experience; an associate degree in engineering, science or a related field; or applicable military training.
Other jobs at the facility vary greatly in salary and qualifications, based on the role.
Some roles that do not require a bachelor’s degree, according to job postings from TSMC, include gas and chemical technicians, electrical technicians, mechanical technicians and information technology technicians.
While those roles do not require a bachelor’s degree, some require technical certifications and other training. Some roles also require a three- to six-month training period in Taiwan.
According to data from Glassdoor, which uses information reported from current and former employees, salaries for technician roles can range from about $50,000 per year to about $81,000, depending on the role.
How much will engineers be paid at TSMC?According to Glassdoor data, engineering roles at the company range in pay from about $95,000 to $150,000 depending on responsibility and experience.
Those jobs generally require a bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, with some roles requiring degrees in specific types of engineering, according to job postings from TSMC.
Engineering roles with more seniority can earn more, ranging from about $115,000 to $270,000, according to Glassdoor data.
TSMC could get $10M grant if it meets job benchmarksTSMC has submitted an application for an Arizona Competes Fund Grant, administered by the Arizona Commerce Authority. It would be worth $10 million. The grant request only covers the first $12 billion phase of the plant, but it commits the company to creating 1,900 jobs — a benchmark that the company said it has already reached.
The application states that TSMC is committing to a $69,410 average wage. However, the company said that is a minimum, and the expected average wages at the plant will be much higher.
To receive the full grant, the company must show that employees at the facility are earning at least the average amount the company committed to in the application.
