NASA heads for rad-hard ARM

Don Dingee

A final solicitation has been issued for a 4 year program under the High Performance Spaceflight Computing Processor Chiplet program, requesting a rad-hard ARM Cortex-A53 core with Serial RapidIO interfaces.

Air Force, NASA to develop radiation-hardened ARM processor for next-generation space computing

This would be huge, a third-generational change in the US after rad-hard 1750A and Power processors, while Europe is still on rad-hard SPARC.

Vendors have one month to respond with bids; no word who is in the running yet.
