MEMS are going to be the ultimate marriage of medical and the semi sector. They will become the prominent tool in research and discovery to diagnosis and monitoring, controlling and changing how drugs are applied and work, but the functions of the human body. Just like the semi world has and is dramatically lowering the cost of computing while increasing functionality, it will do the same to medical devices at every level from raw research to ultimate cure or control. This will not only apply to medical, but to almost everything we touch. The Semi/MEMS technology is still in its very early infancy in both functions and size. The semiconductor/MEMS telescope I wrote about in an earlier post is but one of thousands current examples. The semi/MEMS industry is set to grow geometrically in size and scope. TSM is set to be at the center of this for Morris Chang stated that MEMS are one of the greatest opportunities of the future. The medical world is just starting to go through a revolution computing and communication have been going through for fifty years thanks to MEMS. This will propel the continued rapid growth of the semi sector for decades to come. Of course there will be fits, starts and hiccups, but accelerating growth will continue for this reason. Medical is just the one of the next great growth sectors for this area with many more to come.
