In response to global chip orders and the rapid development of AI, TSMC continues to search for available factory land to keep the most advanced process technology in Taiwan for development. In addition to three 2-nanometer technology wafer fabs, Kaohsiung Nanzi Park also has a base that can accommodate the demand for factories with technologies below 2 nanometers. It is reported that the Kaohsiung City Government has made advance arrangements to lock in the A14 (14 angstrom) process and take stock of the land and water and electricity supply for next-generation advanced technology production as a strong backing for TSMC.
In response to TSMC’s plan to expand its Emmy process layout in Kaohsiung, the company kept a low profile and stated that it would not respond to market rumors.
TSMC’s recent process and packaging layout
Earlier, due to the cultural relics excavated at Taibao Farm in Chiayi Science Park, the outside world was worried about the progress of TSMC in setting up CoWoS advanced packaging plants. High-level officials familiar with the matter confirmed that TSMC has set up two CoWoS advanced packaging plants in Chiayi Branch. Although some work has been suspended due to cultural capital issues, TSMC The action plan proposed to rescue cultural assets has been approved. TSMC will adjust the process and the factory construction will proceed according to the established plan. The completion target has not changed.
TSMC is adding a third wafer fab in Nanzi Park with a 2-nanometer process. Kaohsiung City is very active in solving problems such as water, electricity, land, and surrounding living functions. It is reported that the land in Nanzi Park can accommodate TSMC to build up to 5 wafer fabs. There are reports in the industry that the 4th and 5th fabs are moving towards the A14 process layout, but it has yet to be announced by TSMC. The new Zhongke factory in Taichung is also rumored in the industry to use process technology below 2 nanometers.
Nanzi's first 2nm process technology wafer plant is expected to enter mass production in 2025. Although there are currently no 2nm products on the market, its output value is higher than that of 3nm. People familiar with the matter said that it will be used in HPC high-speed computing and intelligence in the future. In the field of mobile phone applications, there are also electric vehicles, self-driving cars, etc. TSMC has always been ahead of the curve in developing advanced technologies to prepare for future market layout.
It is understood that in addition to the confirmation of three 2nm processes in Nanzi Park, the Kaohsiung City Government has also begun to take stock of the long-term land supply for the next generation of advanced process technology. It is also conducting land use planning procedures and has also prepared the supply of water, electricity and other needs to provide TSMC with Expanding development of processes below 2 nanometers. Relevant executives said that in addition to a certain land area, technologies below 2 nanometers also have water and electricity requirements, including recycled water and green power requirements. Not every location can meet TSMC's needs, and many counties and cities are interested in actively deploying them.
In addition to three 2nm factories in Nanzi Park, in response to the rapid development of computing power in the new era of AI, TSMC is actively planning for the development of processes below 2nm, and even targets mass production in 2026. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chimai continues to envision providing TSMC with the foundation for long-term development Demand means that "opportunities are reserved for those who are prepared." TSMC has demand for CoWoS advanced packaging plants, and Kaohsiung also has land to supply. It is reported that Manager Kuo Chih-hui is also fully assisting TSMC with its various plant expansion needs.
