Is optical computing just a dream or can it become a reality?

I have read many articles about optical computing and some versions have actually been built and new light conducting biomaterials look to hold promise. Any thoughts or comments either way would be greatly appreciated. This could hold the answer to heat and power problems. Also, what companies and institutions may be working in this area of study?
