Habana Labs founders leave Intel to form AI startup

Is it due to consolidation/cost cutting? I am not sure how Intel works. To my understanding, there should be a GPU team and the Habana team.

Could it be the case that the founders of Habana had hoped Intel could spin it out as a separate company?

It's quite typical when a large company like Intel acquires smaller Habana Labs in 2019 for the acquired founders to stick around for a short while, then leave, but only after their stock options have vested. Big companies tell you what to do, while at a new startup you get to decide your own future, it's all about freedom and expression, and having another exit event through acquisition is validation that their new idea had perfect timing.

In the acquisition deals I have done key employee retention is a 2 year lock up then stock and other incentives to stay after that. Unfortunately, with the drop of the Intel stock price employee retention is going to be difficult.

From what I get these people were on Jim Keller's team and were developing the Royal Core project. Which got canned due to downsizing.
