EDA Companies & IP Start-up Relationship: Customer/ Competitor/ Acquisition Target

IP is an area where traditional EDA companies are increasing their focus. The recent several acquisitions of IP companies as well as in-house IP development by leading EDA companies support this.

The interesting question arises, how EDA companies will now look at start-up IP companies and how they will strategize their business policy towards them.

Will the IP companies be viewed as normal customer base? Or they will be viewed as competitor and EDA companies will be less interested in their success? Or they will be viewed as potential future acquisition target and EDA companies will help these IP start-ups to succeed.

Barun,

If an IP start-up company needs EDA software tools, then they are considered friends of any EDA company. Once their revenue and success becomes apparent, then they become an acquisition target for either Synopsys or Cadence (but not Mentor).

Hi Daniel,

Your comment is right and that is a win-win scenario for both IP start-up and EDA company. The EDA company should be open to provide tool to IP start-up in exchange of equity. But somehow I am seeing that is not happening

Barun
