There used to be a company called Computer Associates that followed a similar approach: buy a company, lay off as many employees as possible, cut the R&D budget to the minimum, and raise prices significantly.

I met Hock Tan at a TSMC event in Taiwan. He is definitely a what you see is what you get person. I also know someone who reported to him and Hock is a very hands on leader. If this story is true I can assure you Hok was behind it.
